Six schools compete to design house of the future

PUPILS have been looking towards an eco-friendly future at a creative design competition.
Year 5 children from six primary schools were challenged to research, design and build a model eco-house, factoring in underground heating and insulation to help manage their carbon footprint.
After working with the support of industry mentors (from Babcock, Sellafield, Westlakes Engineering and URS), the culmination of the six-week project took place at Energus on Tuesday, when a panel of experts judged their work.
Bransty was awarded the top prize of £300, with St James’ second and St Joseph’s third. Spot prizes were also awarded to St Bridget’s, Egremont (for research and presentation), St Mary’s (for design) and St Patrick’s (for construction), while St Mary’s pupils were judges to have designed the best health and safety poster.
The event was organised by St Benedict’s for its feeder schools, and thanks went to Babcock’s Steve Dawson for sponsoring the event, and GEN II’s Mike Smith for the venue.
