NUCLEAR regulators are to prosecute Sellafield Ltd over the dumping of “radioactive” bags on Lillyhall landfill site.

The company faces nine charges concerning the disposal of four bags containing low-level radioactive waste two years ago.

Eight of the charges are being brought by the Environment Agency and the other by the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

The prosecution follows an extensive investigation into the allegations of unauthorised dumping.

Sellafield Ltd said: “We now need to take the time to consider the information provided to us by the agencies. As this matter is subject to proceedings we are unable to comment further at this stage.”

The Environment Agency charges are under the Radioactive Substances Act/Environmental Permitting Regulations and for the Office for Nuclear Regulation under the Health & Safety At Work Act.

The charges will come before magistrates at West Cumbria Courthouse in Workington on December 12.
