Sellafield staff boost for Cancer Research

WEARING colourful costumes and sparkly feather boas, a group of Sellafield nuclear laboratory workers completed the Race for Life for charity.
Staff from the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and their children ran, walked and jogged the five-kilometre route in Carlisle, where they joined over 2,800 others in the event in aid of Cancer Research UK.
The group of 25 women and children had held a host of creative fundraisers prior to the race.
Vikki Brett, project manager at NNL, said that ‘Cake Wednesdays, Fast Thursdays’ were held at the site where staff made and sold cakes at work. Their children also organised fundraising activities.
She said: “One little girl raised £120 at school through cakes and another sold old golf balls she’d collected and raised £50.”
Staff from three sites – Warrington, Preston and Sellafield – completed the Race for Life challenges in aid of one of their colleagues who is suffering from cancer.
Vikki said: “On the day of the race, everyone was quite excited and we all had a great time. There was a warm-up to start with and the route itself was only 5km. The atmosphere was amazing!”
A total of £1,658 has been raised at the Sellafield site, with NNL giving a considerable donation to the cause. Following this challenge, the team hopes to continue with a monthly cake sale, each time raising money for different local causes.
