Sellafield staff ‘are working too long’

KEY Sellafield workers are seen to be in danger of fatigue by working too long, especially in areas of higher risk.

Have your say

I agree. I've worked through all levels from apprentice to 'pen pusher' and my overriding memory is that the higher you go the more you do for less thanks. All the shop floor people think that the own & run the place which is a load of rubbish. I regularly work a 10 hour day for no extra pay or credit time and have very little opportunity to take leave. Shop floor guys should grow up and start to appreciate who really runs sellafield.

Well said boredofthebull. It's a load of old rubbish that the 'shop floor' folk keep sellafield running. Ive been on both sides as an apprentice & craft then onto a 'pen pusher' now to know who really gets thing done. If it wasn't for us pen pushers sellafield would be closed as the shop floor don't have the first clue as to what goes on. To use a phrase from my building, "I wouldn't pay some of them with washers!!"

What a shame it is to see the typical blinkered view of 'its us who do the work innit' never been anywhere else or done nothing scourge of sellafield bringing the rest of the workforce down to their depths. Im sure that during your 3-4 hours spannertime a day you make a huge difference whilst forgetting you are part of a huge chain of controls designed to keep the place going safely and preserve your livelehood. Overpaid eh lads? Find another place where basic work gets you such a premium and if you are lucky enough an extra 10k to be on shift, never mind turning up in the morning and going home carefree at the end of the day! Just remember without the pen pushers all those instructions you use, all those licences to operate etc. and yourselves wouldnt exist. Fortunately Ive seen pretty much every level of SL and seen how each resents the rest, with the small minded view that the others are doing nothing whilst 'we' are doing the 'jobs'. Grow up lads!

My heart bleeds... Doesn't mention how much half of these over paid pen pushers actually earn does it? What about nurses (good ones that is) who do well over 12 hour shifts at a time and are paid a fraction of what some of these lazy, up their own back side desk workers make. Plus the added yearly (is it two?) bonuses. Dont make me laugh... Get into the real world and do some real graft...

sellafied worker im not sure what you are on about your contradicting yourself read my post it says exactly what you said, pen pushers get paid to much and shop floor workers dont get paid enough i may be a ordinary bloke who lives in whitehaven but i cant see what your trying to point out, as for allowances im sure that there are still some people out there who add workers shift allowance onto the basic wage and say well you get paid a fortune shift allowance does exactly what it says on the tin, its an allowance for working shifts working xmas day when most people are tucking into dinner with there kids and family

Sorry Truthfull Man you are wrong.
The pen pushers are actually paid more !
The basic wages when you take off allowances are much better for walking around with a clipboard and these days they can work what hours they want....usually first shift times.
Get rid of these guys and more on the "shop floor".

12 hour shifts ?? 5 shifts now only 4 if you go on 12 hours not meny people wotk double shifts and worker that have been in 12 hour shifts were very happy to come off them ....Fact AND THE 4 ON 6 OFF it will take you a day to get over the 4 12hour shifts Fact so thats 5 off then you can do much on the 5 day off as you are at work for 12 hours next day Fact. and the point you require a days leave !! it will cost you a day and a half of leave to take one shift off not for a day worker or are thay day SHIFT workers now .

can someone answer this for me.
how come at a time when VNs at sellafeild are at a high for quite some time, why are these areas not recruiting craft personnel?

we are ploughing money into these so called priority jobs, yet, this sounds fairly serious to me?

Well said Karlos, to many pen pushing people in non jobs jobs not related to the running of plants getting paid the same as people who are protecting nuclear safety plant personnel the environment and the company reputation. This is the biggest issue on site at this moment in time NMP you need to take hold of the reins and sort out the department we all know are causing it
