Sellafield safe working boosts mountain rescue

SELLAFIELD Ltd has achieved more than one million man hours without a lost-time accident.
And to mark the achievement, David McNerney, NMP executive director for Sellafield Ltd, human resources and team members have presented Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team with a cheque for £500.
Tracy Pritt, external training advisor for Sellafield Ltd, is just one of the team members who helped achieve this safety milestone.
She said: “I have completed a number of peer to peer observations which have been mostly centred around office safety and security. These have involved both safe and unsafe actions.
“Raising these observations and making people more aware all helps towards keeping us safe and hopefully contributes to the reductions in accidents and events on site.”
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team is based in Gosforth and its area covers Wasdale, including England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike, Eskdale and from Whitehaven to Muncaster.
Mike Gullen, team leader, said: “I would like to thank Sellafield Ltd for this donation. The team relies solely on kind donations to keep our vital service going. It costs around £45,000 per year to run the team.
“All team members are voluntary and are on call 365 days per year, 24 hours a day, in all weathers. To date we have dealt with 60 999 calls this year.
“We are very grateful for the support it receives from Sellafield Ltd and other local companies for releasing our members during working hours to attend rescues. Around 60 per cent of the team works at Sellafield.
“We are allocating this specific donation to our new pocket-sized defibrillator.”
