Sea adventure for cadets

WHITEHAVEN Sea Cadets have taken part in a host of training exercises off the English coastline.

The group of 12 cadets travelled to the Channel Islands where they spent one week sailing to Jersey, Guernsey, Torquay and Dartmouth.

Chairman of Whitehaven Sea Cadets, David Abbott, said: “They all had a fantastic time even though the weather was quite bad. A couple of the lads have also gained their powered boat qualifications.”

The group set sail from Jersey on the cadets training ship, the John Jerwood. Chief Petty Officer (SCC) Maureen McEuan was one of the two Whitehaven staff who accompanied the cadets. She said the trip is a vital annual event in the Sea Cadets’ calendar.

“An offshore voyage offers an opportunity for some of our cadets to challenge themselves and have a taste of life at sea,” she said.

While on board, the cadets were involved in all aspects of the ship’s operation, from navigation to emergency drills and steering the ship. Apart from practical skills, they also learnt about the importance of working in a team.

Mr Abbott said the Whitehaven Lions and Whitehaven Rotary made “extremely generous donations”, which had made the trip more affordable for the cadets. Presentations are set to be held by cadets to the two organisations to show members photos of the voyage and to say thank you.
