School’s ‘abundance of talent’ highlighted at awards’ evening

ST Benedict’s Catholic High School has held their annual PE awards.
The evening celebrated and rewarded the “abundance of sporting talent’’ at the school.
Lisa Powe, Head of PE at St Benedict’s, said: “All the students who received awards at the evening are a huge credit to the school. They are dedicated young sports people who deserve success.”
The awards were presented by Stephen Chambers who is the Copeland Schools Partnership Development manager.
Danny Hodgson, of Year 11, received the Sports Personality of the Year Award.
A special award was given to the school’s Shooting Stars Group who had previously won the Sporting Initiative Award at the 2011 Copeland Sports Awards Evening. Miss Powe said: “We were very proud to have achieved this award in recognition of the opportunities that we provide for the students in our school.’’
AARON Baker (Inclusion Award): A Year 10 student who attends the Shooting Stars PE club. A very caring person, works well as part of a team and has often been selected as team leader.
JENNY Scott (Dedication Award): She is a Sports Ambassador and currently a leading organiser of the Primary Schools Olympic Games.
YEAR 11 Boys’ Football (Team of the Year): County U16 Champions and reached the last 16 of the National Schools Football Competition (entry of 900 schools). The team have not been beaten by a Cumbria Schools team since they began St. Benedicts in 2007... the first time this has been achieved.
JORDAN Burns (Outstanding Achievement): Captain of the successful Year 11 rugby league team, he has been part of Warrington Wolves Academy since Year 9.
DANNY Hodgson (Sports Personality of the Year): An outstanding all-round sportsman, he represents St Benedict’s football at county and national level. Dedicated and committed to achieving success and giving 100 percent in all activities.
PERFORMERS of the year were: Amy Fox and Andrew Bulman (Year 7); Danaika Gates and Lewis Pritchard (Year 8); Alex Graham and Connor McAleavey (Year 9); Lauren Graham and Jake Moore (Year 10) and Linzi Donaldson and Cole Walker-Taylor (Year 11).
