School points to team spirit as inspectors note good progress

WHITEHAVEN School has made “clear progress” in all areas after being told that it must improve.
Monitoring advisors visited the school last Friday to see whether improvements have been made since it was given a ‘notice to improve’ by Ofsted in March. At that time, out of the five areas covered in the report, three had been deemed inadequate – the worst grade schools can receive – and two were satisfactory.
However, following this latest visit to the school, the local authority’s senior advisor has praised the school for the improvements it has made.
Although the written report has not yet been received by the school, staff say the verbal feedback confirmed the majority of lessons observed were good or better. They said advisers had seen a consistent approach to marking and assessment across the whole school.
Headteacher Lynette Norris said: “All staff and students deserve a huge congratulations and thank you for their stacks of hard work and effort.
“There is a tangible team spirit in school, which is what makes a good place great. Everyone deserves a real break this summer as they have achieved so much, so quickly.”
During the visit, advisers observed lessons, spoke to students and staff and analysed a cross-section of students work. They also looked at records and files of all leaders and managers within the school.
Staff said that in the recent Ofsted report, inspectors had noted there were outstanding teachers and that the work of these individuals should be shared with their colleagues.
The school said the monitoring team was “delighted” to report there was extensive evidence that this was happening across the school and encouraged the school to keep this up as it was making a huge difference.
