Martha Jackson was invited to the party at Buckingham Palace, on invitation from the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Sir James Cropper, in recognition of her years of service as a warden at St Michael’s Church, Lamplugh.

“The honour is a tribute to all the people of Lamplugh and the surrounding villages; it’s good to have something that raises a smile and makes people happy,” said Mrs Jackson, who was accompanied on the day by her daughter-in-law, Diane Jackson.

“The weather was excellent and the guests were treated to a selection of music from two military bands and an opportunity to walk around and explore the Queen’s private garden, before tea and sandwiches were provided in a large refreshment tent on the lawn.

“The band played the national anthem as the royal party appeared, led by the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Duke of Kent, Prince and Princess Michael, Princess Alexandra and the Duchess of Gloucester.

“I’d like to thank the Lord Lieutenant for the unforgettable honour, and to whoever it was who put my name forward. It was a truly wonderful occasion.”
