Ravenglass: ‘Drains unable to cope’ says resident
Last updated at 13:20, Thursday, 06 September 2012
BLOCKED drains caused the flooding in Ravenglass, says a resident whose home was damaged in last week’s floods.
At least seven properties were affected and fire crews had to pump water away from roads and pathways, following the torrential rain.
Peter Basham, of Main Street, said: “It’s flooded in the past, but this time it’s quite serious. It’s all down to the lack of maintenance of the drainage system.”
Mr Basham says he was woken in the early hours of last Thursday morning by the emergency services clearing water nearby.
He said: “I got up with the noise of the fire engine. I could see the weather outside. I was going to take some photos to show the council the flooding. Unfortunately when I got downstairs I could feel the floor was wet.”
Mr Basham said in the last two months, there have been three other separate flooding incidents – and little has been done to improve the drainage system.
“It’s not just one issue, there are a lot of issues that need sorting,” he said.
