Royal surprise: Golden wedding couple Cyril and Nancy Garner with grandaughter Ellie Kate Garner and the letter from one of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting.

Nancy and Cyril Garner, of Frizington, received the letter after their granddaughter wrote to Her Majesty expressing her gratitude for all they have done for her.

The couple also received a picture of the family tree and will head off to Haydock Races to see Sir Tom Jones and Jessie J as a present from all their family.

Ellie-Kate Garner, 15, said: “My grandparents have helped to raise me along with my mum. I wanted the Queen to know how proud I am of them and how much they mean to me.”

Cyril, 74, said: “I was gobsmacked, it’s incredible for them to acknowledge a 15-year-old girl. You won’t see many letters like this in the county.”

Nancy, 70, said: “We’re very proud of her and it was the ultimate tribute to us on our anniversary.”

Cyril and Nancy went to St Paul’s School, Frizington, before meeting in 1962.

“I remember seeing Nancy and thinking ‘wow I fancy her’ and it went from there,” said Cyril. He worked at Florence mine and Nancy worked for Kangol before the couple wed in St Paul’s Church in 1964.

“If someone tells you that they’ve had 50 years of sunshine and light then they’re lying!” said Cyril.

“Of course we bicker sometimes and have arguments but we get past it and get on with it. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and we’re always having fun,” said Cyril.

Nancy added: “It’s all about trust, love and caring. We’ve had more than enough laughs and making the diamond anniversary will be no problem at all.”
