Queen’s invitation to mark Mildred’s 42 years’ service

A WHITEHAVEN woman who worked at West Cumberland Hospital for 42 years has been invited to the Queen’s Garden Party in her Jubilee year.
Mildred Linstead has been invited in recognition of all her work for the NHS. She left her career last year as sister in endoscopy to spend more time with her family.
Before that she worked in many areas of the Whitehaven hospital, including intensive care, general surgery, gynaecology and also as a midwife.
Starting at the age of 18 in 1969, Mildred has only had two breaks over the 42 years, which was to have her children, Jonathan and Michelle. Many might know her from the hospital as ‘Sister Black’.
She was nominated to attend the garden party by her friend, Catherine Mitchell, who works at West Cumberland Hospital as a nurse specialist in stoma care. She wrote to Buckingham Palace and said she would like Mildred to have some recognition for all her work.
Mildred is looking forward to the trip, with her husband David, in May. “I am delighted to be invited, it’s something I have known others to go to so I am really pleased to be going,” she said.
