Pupil Sam in scholarship success

ST Benedict’s pupil, Sam Jakobson, has been awarded a student sponsorship by Sellafield Ltd after winning a prestigious Arkwright Scholarship.

The Arkwright Scholarships Trust began in 1991 designed to encourage talented young people in the country to think about taking up a career in design and engineering.

Sam was presented with his scholarship by Sellafield Ltd’s education officer, Corrin Nichols, at an event held at the Institution of Engineering & Technology, in London.

Corrin said: “It was a great honour to attend the prestigious presentation event and I speak on behalf of Sellafield Ltd when I say that we are very proud to be sponsoring Sam and look forward to working with him in the future.”

Sam, who has a strong interest in engineering, hopes to pursue a career in this field once he completes his A-levels.

At the presentation event, Professor Sir John O’Reilly, vice-chancellor of Cranfield University, said: “Arkwright Scholars are very special young people.

“They combine excellent academic performance at GCSE, enthusiasm for and commitment to science, engineering and technology as their intended career path with a wide range of other achievements and contributions to society: in the arts, sport, outdoor pursuits, voluntary and charitable work and the like.”
