WHEN 10-year-old Niall Keenan’s mother blacked out and lay seriously ill the Hensingham Primary School pupil had to keep his cool.

Although he has dyslexia, Niall frantically looked up the local doctor’s number and rang out. But then he was confronted by an answering machine telling him it was outside surgery opening hours.

The youngster kept his cool and realised he had to dial 999 and successfully got the ambulance service to the family’s Mill Street home in Whitehaven.

Niall’s grandfather, Les, said: “His mother, Sharon, had suffered a blackout caused by fluid on brain. Niall did everything right by keeping his cool and managing to get the emergency service. He then went with her to the hospital.

“It is because the school has helped give him the confidence that he coped so well.”
