Moresby vicar retires after 10 years in role

THE Rev Canon Andy Edwards has retired from his role as vicar of Moresby which he has held for almost 10 years.

He and his wife, Jill, are busy packing up in preparation for their move to High Ireby.

Formerly Rural Dean of Calder and chairman of governors at Parton School, Mr Edwards, vicar of St Bridget’s Church, said it had been a privilege to have served the local community.

With two sons and a daughter (including Olympic gold medallist and broadcaster Jonathan Edwards) and 10 grandchildren, the couple are looking forward to having more time to spend with family and friends.

Andy Edwards arrived at St Bridget’s in early 1998 from the parish of Canford Magna in Dorset. Previously he had been at Ilfracombe, Lundy Island, Teignmouth and Blackpool.

He has a long-standing love and appreciation of the area’s scenic beauty and was happy to remain in the county on his retirement.

“Since my arrival at Moresby I have seen big changes in Whitehaven, with the development of the harbour area and improvements to run-down buildings, the town has certainly come a long way.

“I can say that Jill and I have appreciated being here, and we are thankful. It was a privilege to serve as rural dean and enjoy the support from fellow clergy and to see people in the parish grow in their faith.’’

He looks forward to joining his new parish at Binsey, following his departure from Moresby on September 6. With a keen interest in bird-watching Mr Edwards will enjoy having more time for the hobby and hopefully becoming involved in the Osprey project at Bassenthwaite. He enjoys outdoor pursuits, including walking and golf.

Mr Edwards conducted his last service at St Bridget’s in July. His role as Rural Dean of Calder was taken over by Egremont Rector the Rev John Woolcock, in May.
