A COUPLE who emigrated Stateside in the 1960s and have lived in the Philadelphia area for more than 40 years, have just celebrated their golden wedding.
Ex-pats June and Jack Stanley were married at St Begh’s Church, Whitehaven, by Father Fogarty 50 years ago.
June, 72, the daughter of the late Joseph and Doris Stephenson, hails from Bransty and used to work in the offices of Whitehaven Laundry. Jack, 73, comes from Salterbeck and before retirement worked as a sales engineer, while June was a realtor (the American term for estate agent).
The couple went to Canada initially, having lived and worked in Birmingham for a short while before emigrating, and after 12 months moved to America. They have two daughters, one son and four grandchildren.
They had a celebration at home surrounded by family and friends and are currently enjoying their retirement realising their aim to travel to as many different American states as possible. They have been back to West Cumbria several times too as they still call it home and it is where many of their relatives live, in the Whitehaven and Workington areas.
Amongst them is June’s sister, Pat Dalton, and her husband George, who live in Scotch Street, Whitehaven.
