DAVID Saxon is the new president of Whitehaven Rotary Club. A charter night dinner last week saw the installation of David, 52, of Moresby Hall, as the new president of the club.
Around 90 members and guests attended from 14 Rotary clubs across the district and there were also representatives from Whitehaven Probus Club, the Inner Wheel of Whitehaven, Whitehaven and District Lions and the Soroptimists Society.
Local singer Judith Jones entertained at the event held at Hunday Manor and £500 was raised by a raffle in aid of Breast Cancer research. On Sunday night (July 12) David took part in Rotary’s Cross Fell Challenge, spending a night on top of the highest mountain in the Pennines at an altitude of 893metres. Stayuing overnight in the camp sponsors a Shelter Box that can be deployed wherever in the world it is needed. The Cross Fell Challenge, July 11-19 has attracted some celebrity participants and was been organised by the Rotary Clubs of Appleby and Upper Eden.
David’s first job as president, joined by past president Gordon Southward, was to present Kells Infant School some Usbourne dictionaries. “These give straightforward definitions with speech indicators, example sentences and pronunciation guides for tricky words and provide a perfect aid for children begginning their Sats tests.“The club has managed to provide all the children with one of these special books,’’ said David.
