A HENSINGHAM soldier with the Blues and Royals has received his Afghan service medal alongside HRH Prince Harry at a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

And just as one of the Salmon family was returning from a gruelling seven month posting in the war zone, another son has started his term of duty in Helmand province.

Paul ‘Bob’ Salmon stood with Prince Harry as 180 soldiers from the Blues and Royals received their Afghan service medals from Harry’s aunt, the Princess Royal. Watching on were proud parents Peter and Marilyn, from Egremont Road, Hensingham.

Now Paul, 36, is back in the UK, his younger brother David has been posted out as lance corporal with the same regiment in Afghanistan.

David looks set to be out in the troubled zone for over seven months.

His mother Marilyn told The Whitehaven News this week: “Both lads have always loved the army and both joined at 16. I have the huge worry of being their mother and mixed views on the war out there. But they regard it as an important job and a job they love.”

She said David hoped people from Whitehaven could help his colleagues in his squadron by sending out any sweets, toiletries and other items the troops might miss from home.

“David hopes people might send letters and small items for the troops. Paul said things like wet wipes and toiletries were a great help. When Prince Harry used to get his parcel from home it was a box from Fortnum and Mason – they all looked forward to those arriving!”
