ALL DONE: Paul McKendrey

Paul McKendrey finished the gruelling challenge on June 1 and has raised £1,700 in memory of his mum, Jacqueline (Jac), who died of stomach cancer last year.

Paul, from Whitehaven, has done the Fred Whitton Challenge before but wanted to push himself and thought he would have a go at five.

He said: “I’m an ex-coach potato and this was tough, but it was all for my mam which makes it worth the sore legs and bum.”

Every day there was between eight and 15 riders from different cycle clubs taking on the challenge with him to keep his spirits up.

“Without the lads from Team XIII and Honister 92 I don’t know if I would have finished, they were brilliant.”

Paul is originally from Cleator Moor and his dad, Victor, still lives there.

The 46-year-old said: “He was chuffed to bits when he knew why I was doing this and why.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer so that, with the fact I have done five Fred Whittons, people have been so generous. I only thought I’d reach £250.”

Wife Louise is so proud of her husband, along with children Emily, 12 and Hannah, four.

She said: “He is a very determined man. When he gets an idea in his head there is no stopping him.

“He likes to set goals and I’m so thrilled with how much he has raised.”

Paul cycled nine hours a day around the lake district and said the whole event has been “a good craic”.

“I’ve really enjoyed doing it but it breaks my heart the reason why I have done it.”
