Olympics are here!

A FUN day of sporting activities has been enjoyed by hundreds of local youngsters.

Five-hundred children from 25 primary schools descended on Cumbria Sports Academy at Hensingham last week for Copeland’s Olympic Celebration Day.

Fitness training, Moky, street dance, hockey, bouncy castles and multi-skill races were all on offer – with the emphasis very much on fun.

Guests, including the mayor and mayoress of Copeland, Peter and Louise Tyson, and local torch-bearers Jocelyn Lace and Shameem Arnold, got into the Olympic spirit by joining in the fun and games.

The festivities were opened by sporting stars – England ladies footballer Sue Smith and former Great Britain and England hockey player Charlotte Hartley – followed by a spectacular ceremony in which each school represented a different country.

All the children went away with a medal plus a Copeland Olympics Celebration 2012 wristband.

The event was hosted by the Copeland Schools Sports Partnership and organised by a committee including young sports ambassadors Josh Shepherd and Jenny Scott from St Benedict’s, and Emily Cummings and Natalie Halcrow from Whitehaven School.
