No happy memories for Shappi

STAND-UP comedian Shappi Khorsandi, who came to Rosehill Theatre last year, remains decidedly unimpressed with Whitehaven and dubbed it her ‘worst travel experience’ in the weekend travel section of The Independent on Sunday.
The Iranian-born comedian who first hit the UK comedy scene in 2006, performed at Rosehill last March.
She said of the town: “I went to Whitehaven once. It was like a film set with these bizarre characters.
“There was a man wandering around town with this giant parrot on his shoulder, but it wasn’t done with any humour. He actually turned around to a little child and said, ‘What are you looking at?’ There was just no joy to be found that day.’’

She was on Radio 4 in a show called Shappi Talk and really did the same gag twenty times in different words: my family came from Iran and we had culture shock when we arrived in the UK. She was cute and could raise a smile but not a laugh. I'd rather visit Whitehaven than hear her show. There are too many comedians trying to grab our attention, I think, but Whitehaven is unique and in a good way!

Big mistake to just rubbish and dismiss the views of people coming in to the town however hurtful they are. If she thinks that as an outsider then others will too. We should actually listen and learn from them not ridicule. That's perhaps half our problem here.
