Artist’s letters
A COLLECTION of paintings and letters by celebrated Cumbrian artist Percy Kelly (1918-1993) belonging to a member of his family goes under the hammer at Mitchells auction rooms, Cockermouth, during a two-day sale starting today.
Mitchells recently achieved an auction record of £4,500 for a Percy Kelly painting during their summer sale.
Also included are over 70 lots of fine antique furniture from Anthemion, Cartmel, where the owners are retiring. A George III mahogany china cabinet is expected to bring between £20,000 and £30,000.
Teenager stole
CHRISTOPHER Dodgson stole two blank cheques at Egremont and cashed them for £1,500.
At Frizington he also used someone else’s credit card details to obtain goods over the internet.
Dodgson, 19, of Barncroft Avenue, Seaton, was made the subject of a community order by magistrates sitting at West Cumbria Courthouse. He was put on a 7pm to 7am curfew for 12 weeks, must comply with a supervision requirement and do 200 hours unpaid work. Costs of £85 were also ordered. He pleaded guilty.
Without due care
A FRIZINGTON motorist drove on the wrong side of the road and crashed into a van which was driving in the opposite direction, a court has heard.
Gary Davison, 41, of Lingley Road, admitted driving without due care and attention. The offence took place between Cleator Moor and Frizington.
Magistrates at West Cumbria Courthouse fined him £850, with £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
They ruled that Davison’s driving fell below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver.
Driver fined
STOPPING his car within a zebra crossing-controlled area has landed a motorist with a £200 fine.
Robert McDonald. 29, of Victoria Street, Cleator Moor, admitted the offence which took place at Cockermouth.
Magistrates at West Cumbria Courthouse ordered him to pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
