Take a day off to celebrate win!

WINNING a day’s holiday and raising money for charity was the aim of a quirky fundraiser by Sellafield staff.

Workers at a Cape contractors site took part in a ‘happy holiday’ raffle where the lucky winner, John Higgins, received an extra day’s holiday.

Staff raised a total of £715 for Macmillan Cancer Support through the sale of raffle tickets, costing £5 each.

Organiser Gary Barwise said: “I want to thank the workforce for supporting the cause and manager Peter Hellicar for donating one day’s holiday.”

Another fundraiser for Macmillan is set to take place next month where Gary Barwise and four others, including Olympic torchbearer Gary McKee, will be skydiving at Grange-over-sands.

Homes go ahead despite petitions

PLANS to build 66 homes in Cleator Moor have been given the go-ahead.

Copeland’s planning panel approved the outline proposals at a meeting last week.

The developers, High Grange Developments, propose to build a variety of properties on the site, near Hopedene at Mill Hill, including detached, semi-detached, semi-linked town houses and bungalows. Work on the site will take place in phases.

Copeland Council received four letters of objections and three petitions containing 39 signatures opposing the outline plans.

Turbine agreed

A NEW wind turbine will be erected in Low Moresby.

A field on land adjacent to Watch Hill will be the location for the 74m-high single turbine, with an access track to be created from Moresby Parks Road.

Members of Copeland Council’s planning panel approved the move last week. They however turned down plans for single 67m-high turbine on land close to Kidburngill Farm, Lamplugh.

Blackbeck plans

THE Blackbeck Hotel, near Egremont, has won approval for a major expansion.

It will build a two-storey detached building, with a brewery/farm shop and function room above.

The new-build will be in the current overspill car park.
