Fire crews fight flood water
FIREFIGHTERS spent six hours pumping flood water at Holmrook early Saturday morning.
Mark Smith, of Whitehaven fire station, said due to heavy rain the River Irt burst its banks at Anglair Drie, causing the road to flood.
Crews from Seascale and Bootle were called out at around 4am to pump away the water so properties would not be affected.
Mr Smith said crews were also called out to Whitehaven Market Place last Friday afternoon to pump water out of the cellars of several businesses.
Football club bar not allowed
MIREHOUSE Football Club will not be allowed to convert part of its clubhouse into a bar.
Copeland Council’s planners last week turned down the proposal, having heard that a 23-signature petition and two letters of objection were lodged against the plans.
The club wanted to use part of the first floor of its Seathwaite Avenue building as a bar, but objectors raised concerns about opening hours, the “insufficient” existing parking facilities and the detrimental impact they feel it would have on the neighbourhood.
Councillors agreed that creating a bar in the building would “harm adjacent residential properties in terms of noise and general disturbance”.
Drive ban for motorcyclist, 52
A MOTORCYCLIST has been banned from driving for six months for a string of offences.
John Hodgson, 52, of Lingmell Close, Whitehaven, has admitted driving without insurance or an MoT and driving without an appropriate licence.
All of the offences took place at Low Road, Whitehaven.
The cases were heard at West Cumbria Courthouse last week. District Judge Gerald Chalk ordered him to pay fines of £150, with £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
