Smoke hazard

SMOKE from a rubbish fire was so thick that it posed a hazard to traffic in Whitehaven.

Firefighters were called out at 11.15pm on Saturday in response to reports of acrid black smoke coming from the rear garden of a property in Foxhouses Road, Mirehouse.

They say the householder was burning plastics, which were giving off toxic smoke that was drifting across Inkerman Terrace on the A5094.

Crew manager Ian Thorneycroft, of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We had to enter to put the fire out.

“We would ask people only to burn clean, organic rubbish, to be aware of wind conditions and inform us beforehand so we know that it is a controlled burn.”
