The county’s best beaches

ST BEES and Silecroft have been named as the two beaches with the best bathing water in the county.

They were the only ones to make it on to the Marine Conservation Society’s list of those with a recommended standard of water quality.

Biggar Bank, in Walney, was the next best beach meeting the guideline standard, while Haverigg, Askam, Roanhead and West Shore and Sandy Gap in Walney, reached the ‘mandatory minimum’ standard.

The guide revealed that 516 of 754 beaches tested nationally since last summer had excellent water quality.

Open meeting being held

AN open meeting is being held in Cleator Moor, covering everything from housing, employment and education to health and hospitals.

It has been organised by the Workers’ Educational Association and the Co-op. They want people to air their views and discuss local and national inequality.

The meeting takes place at Cleator Moor Masonic Hall (Civic Hall) on Friday, May 18, 10am-12.30pm.

It is hoped that a group can be set up following on from the event to meet weekly.

2,000 cyclists

NEARLY 2,000 cyclists will be riding along the Eskdale and Gosforth roads this Sunday (May 13) as part of the Fred Whitton Challenge charity cycle ride. The route will be marshalled and signposted with warning signs for riders and motorists.

Musical festival

WHITEHAVEN Musical Festival was set to begin yesterday morning.

The four-day event is being held at Whitehaven Civic Hall and will run until Saturday evening.

The 62nd musical festival features performers from Copeland and Allerdale who will be showcasing their speech, instrumental music and singing talents.

Woman fined

A MOOR Row woman has been fined £66 for failing to report an accident to the police. Marie Alison Hinde, 31, of Scalegill Place, admitted the offence at West Cumbria Courthouse last week.

Magistrates ordered her to pay £55 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
