Curfew for assault man, 42

AN Egremont man has avoided an immediate prison sentence for his assault on a woman on New Year’s Day.

Richard Newton, 42, of Milton Road, admitted the assault, and to a second charge of threatening behaviour from the same date, when he appeared at West Cumbria Courthouse on Monday.

He was given an 18-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was also made the subject of a four-month curfew and must pay £180 compensation to his victim and £250 court costs.

Drive ban

A 28-YEAR-OLD Egremont drink-driver has been banned from driving for 18 months.

Adam Hoskin, of Croft Terrace, was found to have a breath/alcohol level of 64mcgms (the legal limit is 35) while driving at Cleator.

He was further accused of failing to stop and failing to report an accident in which damage was caused to the roadside verge.

Hoskin, who admitted the charges at West Cumbria Courthouse, was also fined £80, and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £15 surcharge.

Illegal tyres

JOHN Bell, 29, of The Crescent, Egremont, has admitted driving with no insurance and two counts of driving with illegal tyres.

Magistrates at West Cumbria Courthouse fined him £110 with £50 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Phone charge

DRIVING while using a mobile phone has landed a man with a £200 fine.

William John Cook, 53, of Trumpet Terrace, Cleator, admitted the offence.

Magistrates at West Cumbria Courthouse ordered him to pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Speeding fine

A MOTORIST has been caught speeding in Whitehaven, a court has heard.

A laser speed indicator device recorded Matthew John Devlin, 26, of Bowness Road, Greenbank, driving at 52mph in a 30mph zone at Low Road. He admitted the offence at West Cumbria Courthouse.

Devlin was ordered to pay a £75 fine, with £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Crash witnesses

POLICE officers in Frizington are appealing for witnesses after a fail-to-stop crash between two Peugeot 206s.

The two cars – a silver and a black one – collided on Main Street around 6.45pm on April 20.

The driver of the black car suffered a facial injury and the male driver of the silver car left the scene.
