Teenager stuck under bridge

A TEENAGER had to be freed by firefighters in Whitehaven after getting stuck underneath a bridge.

The 17-year-old became trapped under the A595 bridge which runs over a ghyll at Hensingham after reportedly bending down to pick up a packet of cigarettes.

A friend of the boy called the fire and rescue service to the scene after his companion got stuck at around 10pm last Tuesday evening.

Firefighters then spent around half an hour at the scene, removing some barriers to help free the teenager.

The boy was taken to West Cumberland Hospital for precautionary checks but was said to be unhurt.

Man stole beer from Tesco

AN off-duty policeman’s suspicion was correct, that Jimmy Joe Taylor had not paid for cans of beer he was carrying outside Tesco, Whitehaven.

On being challenged by PC Alistair Jones, Taylor ran off. He left a jacket behind however which led to his identification.

Taylor was fined £65 for the theft and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 surcharge, together with a £2.97 sum of compensation to Tesco. The total owed by Taylor, 20, of Firth View Walk, Workington, was £167.97 – quite an expensive beer, said magistrates.

Man assaulted his partner

A CLEATOR Moor man grabbed his partner by the neck, magistrates heard.

Leslie Arron Fensome, 25, of Ennerdale Road, admitted common assault and the case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report until June 13.

Whitehaven magistrates heard how the defendant had pushed Kay Miller on to the sofa and then grabbed her by the arm. He later grabbed her by the neck in the bedroom.

Valerie Hendren, for Fensome, said her client agreed his behaviour wasn’t acceptable.

Car vandalised

A CITROEN Saxo had paintstripper poured over it while parked on Patterdale Close, Whitehaven, overnight on May 11/12.

Van damaged

POLICE are investigating criminal damage to a Ford transit van that was parked on Inkerman Terrace, Whitehaven.

The van had a window smashed between 8pm on Sunday and 6.30am on Monday.
