What’s on offer for youths
DISTINGTON residents can hear about what’s on offer for young people in the borough at a meeting next week.
Emma Dickinson, youth engagement officer at Copeland Council, and members of different youth groups will be giving a presentation at the next North West Copeland Neighbourhood Forum.
The meeting will be taking place next Tuesday (February 15) at 7pm at Distington Community Centre.
During the evening, Young Cumbria will also be showing a DVD of their Peer Education Project to the Gambia last year which was part funded by the forum.
The group of students, who were awarded £250 from the forum towards their project, will be answering questions about the trip.
Man threatened his girlfriend
A CLEATOR Moor man who threatened his ex-girlfriend was “appalled by his behaviour’’.
Steven Mark Ardron, 22, of Robert Owen Avenue, admitted common assault on Jemma Crayston and threatening to damage her car.
Whitehaven magistrates heard how the defendant, who had drank 10 pints of lager, had picked up a pole and threatened to hit the victim’s car.
Miss Crayston said he then hit the roof with the pole and had been acting “very threatening’’.
Valerie Hendren, for Ardron, said her client was appalled by his behaviour and was seeking counselling. He denied hitting the car which was undamaged.
The case was adjourned until February 28 for a pre-sentence report.
Street names for new estate
STREET names have been chosen for the new housing estate at Kells.
The development, on the former White School site, will be known as The Views with streets named after the area’s mining history – Colliers Way, Halloways Grove and Jollows Close.
Parkside Hotel
WE have been asked to point out that a malicious hoax fire call regarding the Parkside Hotel was made from a telephone box down the road and not from the hotel itself.
This initial incorrect information had been given to The Whitehaven News by the fire service and we are happy to clarify matters.
