A SELLAFIELD worker has been nominated for a top national award.

Neil Brown has already won a host of awards for his outstanding performance during his Sellafield Ltd apprenticeship at GEN II.

Now a fully fledged member of the Sellafield Ltd team and based on site permanently, Neil has been put forward by GEN II as its nomination for the Learner of the Year Award, at the national ‘VQ Day’ Awards, which celebrate vocational qualifications.

Jackie Miller, of GEN II, said: “Out of the hundreds of learners GEN II has trained over the years, Neil has stood out from the start.

“His thirst for learning, commitment to his studies and support of other learners is a credit to him and make him an exemplary student. We wholeheartedly endorse his nomination as a truly worthy candidate.”

Neil gave up a reasonably secure job as a delivery driver to take on the apprenticeship after becoming a father, because he realised that he needed to do something which would form the basis of a longer term career.

Jackie added: “Neil immersed himself into his apprenticeship and sought to learn as much about his trade as possible. Juggling studies and family life, Neil achieved distinctions during his first year and became a STEM ambassador, factors which contributed towards him wining the Electrical and Instrumentation Apprentice of the Year and overall Apprentice of the Year at the GEN II Learner Awards Ceremony.”

Sellafield Ltd training manager Mark Richards added: “Neil is an exceptional man who demonstrates an extraordinary understanding and ability. Neil excels in his field and undertakes theory and practical work to an exceedingly high standard.

“Neil relishes challenges and demonstrates natural leadership skills both in and outside of the work environment.

“He has great enthusiasm which inspires and motivates others within his group. He is also a team player; assists those less able and it is to Neil’s credit that his Apprentice of the Year Award was deemed deserved by his fellow learners.”

Neil will find out at the end of May if he has been shortlisted for the award. If he is successful he will travel to London to help mark VQ Day on June 20.
