A MAN who has dedicated his life to rescuing those in difficulty on the Cumbrian fells is to receive an MBE from the Queen.

JULIAN CARRADICE, who spent over 30 years with Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, says he was “surprised, honoured and humbled” to learn that he is being recognised in the New Year’s Honours List.

“You don’t get into mountain rescue for reward or recognition,” said Julian, 52, of Meadowfield Grove, Gosforth. “But I am delighted to be able to accept this honour.”

Julian started with Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team in the late 1970s. Since that time he has held a number of roles, including treasurer and team leader, and attended thousands of call-outs in what is one of the busiest rescue teams in the country.

He left Wasdale MRT in February 2011 to take up a voluntary role with a team that specialises in mine rescues, assisting mountain rescue teams and other organisations.

“My life has been mountaineering,” added Julian, “and I am delighted to be able to use my knowledge and skills to help those in difficulty.”

Also receiving an MBE for services to mountain rescue is MARK HODGSON, leader of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team.

For services to the nuclear industry and charity, STEPHEN HENWOOD – the chairman of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) – is to receive a CBE.

Elsewhere in Cumbria, MORAG HOPKINS, an industrial caterer at HMP Haverigg, receives the BEM for services to HM Prison Service and the rehabilitation of offenders.

Receiving the OBE are MOIRA TATTERSALL, the principal of Carlisle College, for services to further education, and Penrith-based CHRISTOPHER STARR, the chair of Forestry Regulation Task Force. He is honoured for services to British Forestry and Forestry Education.

And receiving MBEs are JENNIFER FARMER, Kendal, for services to the magistrates’ system; NATASHA JONES, Ulverston Victoria High School, for services to education; and ROBERT WHEATLEY, Ulverston, for services to the community.
