More Cumbrians taking up sport

THE most successful Olympic Games for Great Britain in a century is inspiring more Cumbrians to take up sport and make healthier life choices.
Cumbria has been named as one of the top three counties in the country for adults taking exercise. Sport England's Active People 4 survey showed a significant increase in the numbers of people taking part in sport and physical activity.
And public health experts advise those returning to or starting new sporting activities to get support and advice from trainers and health professionals.
For three-and-a-half years NHS Cumbria has been working with Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Sport and Physical Activity Forum, Active Cumbria, to encourage Cumbrians to exercise for 30 minutes three times a week.
Nigel Calvert, deputy director of public health, said: “If you have not taken exercise or played active sport for some time you need to start off gently. If you join a sports club or gym, ask the coach or trainer for advice on planning your training.
“However, exercise is an essential part of helping to keep healthy whatever your age.”
