A COMMUNITY garden in Mirehouse has been transformed by youngsters who are taking part in a police-run summer scheme.

The group of 14 children are involved in a junior PCSO scheme – and this week they have been gardening and planting vegetables.

Work has been completed in the community garden, near Wasdale Close.

PSCO Steven Bragg said: “One of my colleagues Special Sergeant Mark Neate owns his own gardening business, so he was our first choice to help. The kids planted different flowering plants and vegetable seeds in the garden.”

Sgt Neate is also set to become an agricultural lecturer at Lakes College in September.

The garden is run by the Mirehouse Residents Group, which has also supported the scheme by allowing meetings to be held at the Seathwaite Community Centre.

A group of children, aged between eight and 12, meet every Wednesday between 2pm and 4pm. Over the past few weeks the youngsters have been meeting first responders, police dog handlers and learning how to use speed radar guns.

PCSO Bragg said: “They have really enjoyed it. They are enjoying having something to do in summer. It’s something different and it’s all about engaging community events in the local activities.”

The scheme is running throughout the year between Hensingham and Cleator Moor. A similar scheme is also running in Millom.
