Minister wants to ban traffic from Sellafield

THE government wants to see all cars banned from Sellafield nuclear site.

How about brand new mono-rails to transport workers in. Connections could be central in every village and town, and all workers from as far away as Carlisle could travel to work in under 30 mins. Magic - no need for cars then.

If it's essential for safety reasons, then it's going to happen whether you like it or not so why worry!

I love the stupid and ill informed remarks about the Nuclear industry, first off there is no other site in the world like Sellafield. The traffic problem which had reduced in recent years thanks to the single occupancy rule will balloon back to previous levels as everyone will head in their own cars. The present public transport will in no way cope with a 10th of the people currently working on site and this is only from areas that actually have some form of public transport. The best idea is to remove as many non essential personnel off site, and I mean those not essential to the day to day safety and production on site. At present the site bus service doesn't cover the whole of site leaving some areas unserviced at all, the whole system would need upgrading, but as for banning all vehicles that will cause nearly all works to stop.

Everybody assumes that every worker had a set in stone start and finish time. I work in a very small successful team of shift maintainer/operators/Engineers on a shift basis. But because we dont have a relief man (was deemed a saving), we are a bit more flexible with our attendances/times (it works for us and suits the company). When they ban all cars, I'm afraid I will have to think about reverting to my shift times...there will be no more staying back to get a job finished (which we do often...we don't walk away like some)...if a processing job will be expected to overrun the end of shift, then it may have to be delayed.
I imagine there will be more people on site doing the same.
On another note...if they ban all vehicles, does this mean they can cut the Guard Force?
Would we really need as many police officers patrolling around looking for incorrectly parks vehicles etc?
I agree something needs to be done to reduce the number of vehicles to truly essential workers (or ones where it benefits the company).
I think it will put more cars on the road..a lot of peple are in car schools for multi occupancy, so they can get straight onto site without having to lurk around Yottenfews..once that incentive has gone, they may aswell come in their own cars (saves having to drive round picking up/dropping off....the extra time saved may help allieviate the extra time added to their day due to the ban)

At what point does it say the unions are against the idea - they are in talks to make sure every possibility is discussed and any issues are ironed out. Please feel free to comment but unless you are aware of the unions stance dont make comments criticising what you think their views are...

Why can't the unions and workers at Sellafield understand that this project is being implemented to protect them, their families, business and the wider community. It's the prime responsibility of every government to protect its citizens. Rather than complaining about the new arrangements and how it will deny them the right to travel to Sellafield by car, they would do better to recognise that they have a bigger and more important responsibility to protect the long term security of their families, colleagues and the business that provides them with the lifestyle most of us can only dream of. Judging by the stream of traffic travelling along the A595 at all times of the day, outside the official finishing times, I suspect that their concern is less about possible delays in getting to work on time and more to do with getting home early!

Another Sellafield story, more great opportunities for union men (never women is it?)/contractors/shift workers/day workers/the teletubbies/Jesus to moan about the terrible imposition of having to get a bus to work. Maybe if they had done in the first place then they wouldn't have axed the empty subsidised ones, and I wouldn't have had to cycle past your traffic queue every day I effortlessly glided into site, until I got out for something more entertaining. I don't see the rigs shutting down because the lads have to get a helicopter to work!

I missed out a zero on my previous comment. The Goverment has invested £2600 per head of population on public transport in London compared to £5 per head in Northern England.

Sellafield union leaders, now Security experts! It seems we will have nuclear at any price. The scale and loss of life that was 911, has been prevented by our intellegence services. Let them do the job. I am not sure who you represent any more.
