Man, 58 charged with 17 sex offences

A 58-YEAR-OLD man from Cleator Moor charged with 17 sexual offences spanning a 35-year period has been sent to Carlisle Crown Court.

Stephen Taylor, of Leconfield Street, appeared before West Cumbria magistrates on Monday (July 21). No formal pleas were entered. He was granted conditional bail.

He is accused of 11 counts of raping a woman, including one of a girl under 16; two of indecent assault on a girl under 16; one of sexual abuse; two of grooming; and one of indecency with a girl under 14.

The offences are alleged to involve five females, the youngest 13 years old and to have occurred in Egremont, Whitehaven and Workington between 1978 and 2013.

The first hearing at the higher court will be on August 4. Magistrates granted bail, the conditions to include residential, reporting to police three times a week and making no contact with witnesses.
