Man, 29, denies stealing

A MAN will face a trial after he denied stealing cash from the Cumberland Building Society in Cleator Moor.

Gareth Flemming, 29, was arrested following the alleged incident on Friday afternoon.

He appeared in West Cumbria Courthouse on Monday after being charged with trespassing at the building society and stealing £1,200 cash. He entered a not guilty plea and will stand trial at Carlisle Crown Court.

Mr Flemming, who police have listed as living at Duke Street, Whitehaven, gave his address in court as “the top of Dent Fell”.

He is further charged with possessing a bladed item in public – namely a lock-knife – stemming out of an incident on Jacktrees Road, Cleator Moor, on June 14, and to failing to answer police bail. He has also denied these allegations.

The defendant will have all cases formally committed to the Crown Court when he re-appears before local magistrates today.
