Main shopping street to be opened up to range of uses

WHITEHAVEN’S main shopping street is about to become ‘open house’ for a wider range of businesses – not just retail – with the aim to fill up King Street’s empty shops.

Have your say

I don't know who the 'council spokesman' is, but s/he should talk to their planners. It certainly is possible to restrict shops being changed to betting shops. The draft plan has a policy against it, and the Council can issue a direction to enforce it.

I hope there are safeguards in to stop every single empty unit being turned into a betting shop.

Observer, Whitehaven doesn't have a town council.

A vote of thanks should also go to the Whitehaven News for making itself available to the people of the town, and surrounding areas, who have been given the opportunity to air their views and thoughts about our town. I sincerely beleive that without this 'commenting medium' being made available, members of the town council would still be unaware as to the strength of feeling that the decline of our lovely town has generated within us. There is no effort required in being complacent.
We also should congratulate ourselves for taking the time and making the effort in posting these comments.
Let us not forget: the town council is voted in by us to represent our best interests and if this means changing what has been the accepted over many years then so be it. Best advice for the council? Keep listening to what the people are saying. As you are probably now beginning to realise, we all know what happens to councils who don't, don't we?
