Local shoppers are rewarded in new scheme

WHITEHAVEN’S high street is looking to boost trade and reward its regular customers with the introduction of a new loyalty card scheme for shoppers.

excited about new scheme: Shelley Williamson

Called Check-Out Whitehaven, it will be launched on Saturday, July 5 as part of Independents’ Day, a national campaign that promotes and celebrates independent retailers and businesses across the country.

Such a scheme has been going successfully in Cockermouth since the aftermath of the 2010 floods. It is also in operation at Wigton and has demonstrated increased footfall.

Now Whitehaven is giving it a go, thanks to the Chamber of Trade and Whitehaven Town Team who have got together to organise its inception.

Representing the two organisations, Shelley Williamson, chairman of Town Team and Charles Maudling, chairman of the Chamber of Trade, will be in Whitehaven market place on Saturday, July 5 to launch and promote the scheme, which up to now is set to attract around 70 participating businesses. (See advertisers’ announcement next week.)

Shelley said: “The way I see it is it’s a free present for shopping where you normally shop; my customers are quite excited about it and can’t wait!”

Shops will each display a poster showing they are members of the scheme, which is free to join, and will have cards available for people to take away.

Each card has 10 spaces and every time more than £3 is spent in a participating shop or business, the card is stamped so that when it is full it can be entered into a prize draw.

There will be several collection points for completed cards.

Ten winners every month (drawn on the 10th of each month) will each receive a £10 voucher to spend in any one of the participating shops.

These shops will have each donated two £10 vouchers a year to the scheme as prizes.

Last year thousands of independent businesses in over 150 locations across the UK became involved in the Independents’ Day campaign which has gained celebrity support from Theo Paphitis of Dragons Den.

Have your say

Think it would help if there were some shops apart from charity shops to use the card in. Walking through the town on Saturday morning it was dead, went to workington in the afternoon and it was bouncing.
