Less hair – more funds!

OVER £2,400 has been raised after a St Bees driving instructor had her hair chopped for charity.

Vidya Nichols had her long hair cut off and an L-plate shaved into her head in April to raise money for the Henderson Suite at West Cumberland Hospital.

She has exceeded her initial target of £1,000 in sponsorship.

“I’m over the moon. I was hoping to raise £1,000, but have been staggered to have raised around £2,400,” she said.

Vidya is part of the West Cumbria Driving Association, and says members have supported her throughout this latest fundraising venture.

“Fundraising is a big part of our group. I couldn’t have raised this much money on my own. It was one of those things where everyone came together to help,” she said.

To raise more money for the cause, Vidya sent her hair to a wig-making company and received £56 for the eight ounces of hair.

She said: “It took me two years to grow my hair for it to be shaved for charity. It’s been nice and cool for summer!

“A sponsored head shave is such an easy way to raise money. The hardest thing for me is to grow my hair as I usually have it short anyway.”

She would like to thank everyone who has sponsored her and the driving instructors who have supported her. Additional thanks go to Jonathan for cutting her hair free of charge.
