Jubilee garden commemorates loved ones

AN unkempt area at Egremont Cemetery has been transformed into a beautiful Jubilee memorial garden.

The garden will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and has also allowed visitors the opportunity to donate a plant in memory of their loved ones. It was opened by the mayor of Copeland, Coun Peter Tyson, followed by a blessing and dedication. The garden was developed by Egremont Town Council’s Geraldine Pritchard and Nelson Shepherd, aided by Lena Hogg’s gardening skills.

Shrubs were donated by Chris Ryder, project manager at Kier Construction, David Shaw provided the top soil for the flower beds, while John Killip created the circular stone planter.

Margaret Woodburn, Egremont town clerk, said: “There is a memoriam book planned and donors have been invited to write a few lines about the person they have dedicated the plant to and this, along with the garden, will be there for future generations to enjoy and will become part of Egremont’s history.

“Great credit must go to the town council and their staff for the tireless work they have put into this plan and their fulfilment will be the number of people who pay a visit to this beautiful and peaceful Jubilee garden.

“Thanks also to Toni Magean for his advice, Copeland Council for their help towards the scheme and everyone who has kindly taken up the offer to donate a plant in memory of their loved ones.’’
