POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a woman was seriously injured in a head-on collision on the A595 at Parton on Saturday afternoon.
The injured woman, who is from Whitehaven, was driving on the stretch of the road known locally as the Parton Long Mile.
Her Renault Clio collided with a Nissan, driven by a 42-year-old man from High Harrington, at 3.15pm, said police.
The road was closed for more than an hour.
The injured woman was cut free from her car by firefighters from Whitehaven and Workington.
She was flown to hospital in Newcastle by air ambulance, and is now in a stable condition in hospital.
Two women who were also in the Clio sustained minor injuries and were treated at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
The driver of the Nissan car involved in the crash was uninjured.
Fire service station manager Andrew Ingrams said: “There were three female casualties and two of them had managed to get out of the car before we arrived.“But one was trapped in her vehicle. “Paramedics were there as well as ourselves and the police. It was quite a difficult extrication. We were working alongside the paramedics.”
Anybody who can help the police investigation should contact PC Andy Laverick, of the Western Roads Policing unit, on 101.
