Traffic safety

A NUMBER of sites in Copeland have been assessed with a view to traffic improvement measures being introduced.

Cumbria County Council’s traffic team has been carrying out traffic counts to gauge volume and speed that may result in future action.

They are Eskdale village, Galemire crossroads (near Keekle) and Beckermet village.

In response to a recent traffic count at Moor Bridge, Palmers Lane, in Millom, it has been agreed to bring in improved signage and lining at the site, particularly on the approach from Haverigg.

And traffic counts have also taken place in Asby, Seascale and Gosforth to assess how recent changes have had an effect.

One-way road

A SHORT stretch of road in Moresby Parks looks set to be made one-way.

A consultation has been launched by Cumbria County Council with a view to introducing a one-way system on the road between Moresby Parks Road and Dent Road.

The move follows a priority system being introduced in the area last year, and it is felt that a one-way system will further enhance safety.

Bike marking

COPELAND police have organised bike marking events across the area.

To deter thieves, officers are holding a number of events to give bike owners a unique number which can be stored on a database. Security and crime prevention advice will also be given.

The events will take place at Thornhill (outside the post office) from 1pm to 4pm, and St Bees car park, from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, August 3.

On Saturday, August 4, officers will be at Egremont skate park, from 10am to 1pm, and at Cleator Moor Square from 2pm to 5pm. They will also be at Seascale skate park from 10am to 1pm, and Frizington car park (opposite Paul’s Wines) from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday, August 5.

Six-week curfew

A SIX-WEEK curfew order has been imposed on a Whitehaven man who stole two bikes.

John Robert Newton, 24, of Kinniside Avenue, admitted the two offences at West Cumbria Courthouse this week.

He was ordered to observe the curfew between the hours of 9pm and 6am each day. He must also pay £85 court costs.
