I'm not resigning, says council boss

AFTER weeks of heavy criticism Copeland Council’s leader is defiant.

Have your say

I do feel a very small bit of sympathy for Ms Woodburn as she is taking all the flak for the shambles. However, whatever happened to Councillors Knowles and Giel who were directors of the rugby club and were leading lights in driving the stadium forward mainly for the benefit of their club? Where is Paul Walker the main driver of the World Cup bid for Copeland? He was the one that was saying the World Cup would see bed and breakfast establishments filled during the cup period when I think most knowledegable rugby fans know that isn't going to happen with the teams allocated to west Cumbria. Where is the expensively paid consultant who should have known the problems of getting access through charity land long before plans got this far? I suppose as overseer of all of this then Ms Woodburn is culpable but lets hear from the others who seem to have sneaked away in to some dark corners.

Karl Connor was sacked by this woman for speaking his mind about the current state of the project.... Looks like he was right all along, I think he needs some sort of apology by the Copland Labour party that he stood for and only had there best intrests at heart

This confirms the typical arrogance often shown by our council leader & her cronies. When will they realise that their constant failure to deliver democratically determined policy is what is starting to agitate the electorate of the borough. Its always about their personal views, not the views of the electorate. Mind you, they prove time after time that they cant deliver their own limited vision so what chance would they have of delivering a democratically derived vision for our neglected, mismanaged borough? Why cant she and her close knit failures do the right thing an disappear quitely?

Could someone give her a proper job rather than letting her continue, like Moses, leading Copeland through the wilderness.

I use to live in Whitehaven and when I come back to visit maybe 4 times a year I see it dying bit by bit each time. The council needs to sort out the lack of shops and make this an attractive town to visit again. A stadium isn't going to sort that out! I suppose by the end of the year there will be nothing left coming into town for

Does Woodburn know the meaning of democratic descision making? How can it be democratic when she chooses her team, they make the votes and she gets rid of anyone that criticises her and her leaders, that is not democracy but a bunch that has self interest as its motivation.

When in doubt, put the blame out there, somewhere, anywhere, doesn't really matter. If you can externalise blame then you can justify your own position and decision-making skills, be those decisions constructive and future orientated, or not.
I do find it rather disconcerting the mention of compulsory purchase order, and the regret therein of not implementing this given that the greater majority of people find this aspect of governaence unacceptable.
Surely anyone in the position of local Council Leader need have no concern regarding having reached the pinnacle of local government, and remaining there for the forseeable future? Why is this? They are voted into this position by the 'inner cabinet', like-minded people who also hold safe seats within our borough (some would say, "aren't they all). You and I, the people of Copeland, the people who pay our dues, have no say in who becomes Council Leader whatsoever. Can this be right? Should we, again, you and I, have a vote in who leads our council? Does "We decide your future and you have no say, you will get what we decide" resonate with you?
There are more than enough able and capable local politicians, of all parties, out there within our borough who are capable of delivering success for us, you and I.
Don't forget folks, "if you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you have always got" (slightly corrupted wording, true though).
Our future is in our hands.
