Help our soldiers at Christmas

AN appeal has been launched to give soldiers serving on foreign fields a treat this Christmas.

The local branch of Support Our Soldiers (SOS) is inviting schools, community groups and individual residents to pack a box of home comforts that will be shipped out to Afghanistan.

Ryan Winthrop, the group’s local coordinator, says that festive treats will be particularly welcomed by the soldiers, including party hats, tinsel, homemade decorations, Christmas puddings, cards, socks and gifts – however no crackers or party poppers.

He also invites people to pack everyday items too, including sweets, biscuits and toiletries. Creative children are also welcome to decorate the boxes.

Filled boxes can be left at any branch of Co-operative Funeralcare, or can be collected by Ryan by contacting him on 07530316037. The deadline is the end of October.

A fundraiser for SOS takes place at Maryport Social Club on October 26 (7pm).

Featuring 80s fancy dress, local singers and CFM’s Robbie Dee, tickets are £7 from How Bazaar in Maryport.
