Week of events point way to a healthy future

A WEEK of fun and healthy activities is planned for all ages in Copeland next week, with everything from doorstep walks and Age UK Fit as a Fiddle sessions to Zumba danceathon.
Copeland Health Week, which starts on Monday, has been organised by Copeland Council and NHS Cumbria. It aims to highlight the many ways of enjoying keeping fit.
The 2011 Health Profile for Copeland highlighted that 19.6 per cent of children aged 10 and 11 are classified as obese, and an estimated 22 per cent of adults smoke.
The rate of hospital stays for alcohol-related harm is also higher than average in Copeland, and life expectancy in the borough is 77 years for men and 80 for women – lower than the national average.
Local sports providers are supporting the week with an extensive range of supplementary activities including a netball taster sessions at Whitehaven Sports Centre run by North Country Leisure, Zumba at Cleator Moor and Whitehaven Civic Hall, Aquafit at Copeland Pool and a wellbeing event at Millom.
There will also be a workshop looking at alcohol issues, healthy weight group and health checkups.
Events (which are free unless stated) include:
MONDAY: 10am Cleator Moor Health Walk starting from Cleator Moor Library. Fit as a Fiddle run by Age UK at Cleator Moor Library, 10am-1pm. Tap Dancing at Whitehaven Sports Centre, 10.30am-11.30am, 11.30am-12.30pm. Netball at Whitehaven Sports Centre, 11am-noon, 7.30pm-8.30pm; Dancercise at Whitehaven Sports Centre, 11am-noon, 7.30pm-8.30pm. Sexual Health Awareness workshop for 13-19 year olds, Frizington Youth Centre, 7.30pm-9pm. Wellbeing Toolkit event, Millom Haverigg Lighthouse Centre.
TUESDAY: 10.45am-11.45am – Young at Heart for people new to exercise £2.50. 11am – Millom Doorstep Walk starting at Bradbury Centre, Millom. 11am-3pm – Blue Skies Support Group, support for people who are experiencing depression, anxiety or stress, Cleator Moor Town Hall; 1pm-2pm – Zumba at Whitehaven Civic Hall; 5.20pm-6.10pm – Beginners Body Conditioning, Cleator Moor Bowls and Sports Centre; 7.30pm-9.30pm – A session on sexually transmitted infections for 13-19 year olds, Cleator Moor Youth and Community Centre.
WEDNESDAY MAY 30: 9.45am-11.45am – Copeland Partnership – Healthy Copeland Event at Whitehaven Civic Hall; 9.45am-10.15am – Beginners studio cycling, Cleator Moor Bowls and Sports Centre; 10.30am-11.30am – Zumba at Whitehaven Civic Hall; 11am-11.45am – Aquafit at Cleator Moor Bowls and Sports Centre; noon-1pm – Zumba danceathons at Cleator Moor, Egremont, Millom and Whitehaven; 2pm-6pm – Community Clean Up at Hodbarrow Nature Reserve; 6pm-7pm – Partner Dancing, Whitehaven Civic Hall;
6pm-7pm Zumba at Cleator Moor Bowls and Sports Centre; 7.30pm-9pm – Risk Taking Behaviour Workshop for 13-19 year olds, Emmanuel Church, Moor Row; 7.30pm-9pm – Sexual Health Workshop for 13-19 year olds, Frizington Youth Centre.
THURSDAY MAY 31: 10.45am-11.45am – Aquafit, Copeland Pool; 11am-3pm – Blue Skies Support Group, Cleator Moor Town Hall; 7.30pm-9pm – C-Card Scheme for 13-19 year olds, Cleator Moor Youth and Community Centre.
FRIDAY JUNE 1: 11am-noon – netball at Whitehaven Sports Centre; 5pm-6pm – bums and tums gentle exercise for all ages and abilities, Millom Recreation Centre, £1.70; Start of Black Combe Walking Festival.
Saturday 2nd June, 10am Bootle Fell and Corney Walk, a seven mile ramble.
SATURDAY JUNE 2: 10.30am-11.30am – Zumba at Cleator Moor Bowls and Sports Centre, free; 11.45am-1.15pm – Inflatable fun, Copeland Pool free; 1pm-1.45pm – Zumbatonic for 8-12 year olds, Whitehaven Sports Centre.
As well as sporting activities and exercise session there will be a workshop looking at alcohol issues, healthy weight group and health checkups.
