Hospital staff hailed as our NHS heroes

FOUR members of staff from West Cumberland Hospital have been named NHS Heroes following a national campaign.
They are Lynne Morgan, Gable Ward sister; Sue Burns, paediatric nurse; Dr Nick West, retired consultant haematologist; and Val McConvey, paediatric secretary.
NHS Heroes was an opportunity for anyone to nominate and honour staff members and teams who have shown exceptional compassion, kindness and skill above and beyond the call of everyday duty.
Lynne Morgan’s nomination included this: “Sister Lynne Morgan’s approach to patients on the ward is very gentle and she makes the patient and family feel supported and safe during their time on the ward.”
For Sue Burns, this comment was made: “Sue has nursed my son for over 15 years and there are no words to describe the commitment and dedication she has towards her job and the children she looks after. She has helped us through some awful times and my son adores her.”
Dr West received this comment: “Dr Nick West who is now retired, was kind, understanding and patient. He always gave hope and will be very much missed at the hospital.”
And Val McConvey’s tribute included this: “Val is worth her weight in gold for the help she gives. Nothing is ever too much trouble for her and she is often our lifeline, helping us without having to trouble the consultant. She has become my ‘telephone friend’ over the years and she really deserves recognition for her hard work.”
The campaign was backed by NHS Chief Executive Sir David Nicholson. He said: “NHS Heroes is a celebration of the very best in the NHS. We know that patients and their families remember, often for the rest of their lives, the little kindnesses and extra effort of the people who cared for them when they were ill. In turn, those people delivering front-line care are supported by an army of behind-the-scenes workers whose own dedication and commitment keeps the NHS running smoothly.”
There were three NHS Heroes chosen at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary:
Angela Docherty, pathology secretary; Dr Adrian Shanks, consultant anaesthetist and the radiotherapy department.
