THERE was a special service with pupils and parents for the retirement of Catherine Winzor, head of St James’ Junior School at St James’ Church on Tuesday.
Mrs Winzor came to St James’ in June 2006, when she was appointed acting head following the retirement of Ian Harrison. Her position was confirmed the following April.
She was formerly the head of Seascale School and Thwaites School, Millom. She also worked as a numeracy consultant and school improvement officer with Cumbria County Council.
Originally from Wolverhampton, Mrs Winzor has lived in Cumbria for almost 40 years.
Her successor is Moira Maughan who has been deputy head at the school for the past six years.
Mrs Winzor said that knowing that from September she would no longer be at the school was “a strange and quite scary feeling’’.
“I know I shall miss the children and wider community and working as part of a team.
“Since the start of my teaching career, 38 years ago, pupils have delighted, frustrated, surprised and challenged me.
“I hope I have been able to challenge them to find their strengths and value the chances they are given.’’
She thanked everyone for the support they had given her during her headship.
