Harbour eyesore set to go

DEMOLITION work has started to clear the way for a four-storey complex with apartments and shops on Whitehaven’s harbourside.

Going...: The dilapidated building is being demolished to make way for apartments and shops

Two Victorian houses, which sit next to the Old Pumphouse, are being flattened to make way for the development.

Permission was originally granted for the scheme on Bardywell Lane in 2008 and when the deadline for work to be carried out nearly expired, Park Portfolio successfully applied for a three-year extension.

Around six weeks ago, West Cumbrian company Roewood Construction Ltd, bought the land from the Nottingham-based company.

It is pressing ahead with the plans, but owner of the company, Pat Roe, said he was unsure whether penthouses, bars and restaurants would still feature in the final design, but there would be a coffee shop and 12 apartments.

Mr Roe said: “It will take around a year before the development is open, but there has been a lot of interest in the apartments, which will be high-spec, already.”

Have your say

Sad news that 'eyesore' is one of my favourite buildings in whitehaven, such a shame when history is wiped out for boring plain soul less modern buildings

Mau, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Mark House to be knocked down. Developers were given permission to redevelop both that and The Park/swimming baths next door back in 2010 but haven't been in any hurry to start - just as developers have had permission to build on the bus station, and the old bus garage site opposite spoons for over five years and have done nothing.
