JERICHO School pupils eagerly watched the Olympic football games from the sidelines when they were awarded tickets to see live matches in Newcastle.
It followed the school’s link with the BBC Get Set Network in preparation for the Olympic and Paralympic London games.
Students at the Whitehaven school have been getting in touch online with other youngsters around the world to see how they were preparing for their country’s participation in the Games.
The school was allocated tickets for both the men’s and women’s football tournaments at St James’ Park and a draw was held in assembly on Governors Day to decide which students would take part.
Year One pupil JAMIE REAY attended the men’s games on July 26 with his parents and was delighted with his front-row seats. Last Tuesday, 20 pupils and staff attended the Canada v Sweden and France v Columbia women’s matches.
Headteacher SHAUN MONAGHAN said the group enjoyed the warmth shown by the volunteers and games makers in Newcastle, particularly the face painting and Mexican waves.
He said: “I’ve never seen so many happy faces at a football match! The Olympic organisers ensured it was a day our pupils will never forget; definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate the Olympics in our own country.”
