Gosforth, Haile and Wilton's community spirit, by Yvonne and Norman Clarkson

THE events of the last week have been one of the worst in the recent history of West Cumbria and it is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we express our condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in the horrific shootings last Wednesday.

If ever the phrase “what can you say?” is applicable, now is that time.

People have died, others have sustained terrible injuries and some have witnessed sights which no-one is prepared for, but as always our hospital and emergency services have dealt with the aftermath with enormous care, professionalism and dignity.

West Cumbria is a tightly-knit small community whose history has prepared us to deal with tragedy. We close ranks, we protect and nurture our own and take great strength from the solidarity which is palpable in our towns and villages.

We will continue to support those who have been affected and must not forget that any offer of practical help or company may be welcomed.

It would be kind to spare some thought and compassion for the family of Derrick Bird, who are entirely blameless for his actions and who are also innocent victims. They are also grieving for the loss of their loved one and trying to come to terms with his actions.

YVONNE CLARKSON, Copeland Councillor (Beckermet, Haile and Wilton)

NORMAN CLARKSON, County Councillor (Gosforth)
